Obituary of Ralph L. Updyke

Ralph L. "Bud" Updyke, age 83, of Tioga, passed away September 10, 2016. Bud was a genuine person and a friend to all he met. His life story is an illustration of dedication, honor, and community service. Bud was born on March 1, 1933, the son of Harriett and Gilbert "Gib" Updyke. He was raised on the family farm in Millerton, where he developed a strong work ethic. Bud left school in 1951, volunteering to serve in the U.S. Army. He became a decorated veteran of the Korean War and completed his high school diploma upon his return home. Bud married Bonnie Smith in 1957. At the time of her passing, the couple had enjoyed 56 years together. Bud retired from the Pennsylvania Electric Company in 1993 after 32 years of employment. He was active in the Tioga Volunteer Fire Department (50+ years of service, including Fire Chief) and Tioga Volunteer Ambulance Association (a founding member, as well as serving as President). Bud was elected to the Tioga Borough Council (20+ years, serving as a Councillor and as Council President) and elected Mayor of Tioga. He was appointed by the Auditor General to serve as the Director of the Fireman's Legislative Federation of Pennsylvania. Bud was an active member of the Tioga American Legion Post #235, Tioga Masonic Lodge #373, and Coudersport Consistory. Bud was predeceased by his parents, devoted wife, and sister, Helen "Cookie" Gee. Bud's memory will be cherished by his three children, Alan (Gina) Updyke, Justice Sallie Updyke Mundy, and James (Jennifer) Updyke; seven grandchildren, Jon, Jared, James Patrick, John, Ralph Daniel, Bonnie Kate, and Cullen; and siblings, Lenna Fletcher, Doug (Janet) Updyke, and Walter "Bip" Updyke. A memorial service and celebration of Bud's life will be held on Saturday, September 17 at 4:00 p.m. at the Tioga Fire Hall. Military honors will be presented by the Tioga County Honor Guard.
