Obituary of Irene Messing

Irene Rumsey Messing, 93, died June 22nd, 2014 at the Broad Acres Nursing Home in Wellsboro, PA. Mrs. Messing was born to Dean and Helen (Crum) Rumsey on February 1st, 1921 in Sayre, PA. She was wed to Frederick Messing on August 2nd, 1943 at the Daggett United Methodist Church. While growing up, she worked in her father's bakery and upon graduation from the Mansfield State Teachers College, began her teaching career in the one room school house in Coryland, Pa. Irene then went on to be employed by Millerton Elementary School for over thirty years as both a teacher and then a principal. She loved to learn and was a lifelong educator. With a stern classroom discipline, she was remembered by many sixth graders, including both her daughters. Her enjoyment of geography and history came through in her lessons. Later in life, she loved to tap trees and boil maple syrup with her husband. As a member of the Daggett community and the Daggett United Methodist Church for over 80 years, she taught Sunday school, was president of the United Methodist Women, and was secretary of the Daggett Cemetery Association. With her husband, they acted as caretakers of the Daggett Cemetery for over twenty years. Irene was an avid traveler who was always ready for a trip. Well into her Golden years, she enjoyed cruising the Caribbean or go on adventures with her family to Belize, Guatemala or Costa Rica. As a fan of sports, she loved watching football and particularly her Grandsons playing. All her life, she enjoyed reading, bird watching, gardening and cherished time with her family. Her life in three words: Family, Faith, Strength. Mrs. Messing is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Messing, and survived by two daughters, Ann and Tom Nickeson of Bicknell, UT and Lisa and Mark Tuttle of Redmond, WA. She is further survived by five grandchildren, William Linder, Heather Linder Spring, Stephanie, Jennifer and Daniel Tuttle and a great granddaughter, Alyvia Spring. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sibling Evelyn Rumsey Norton. Family and friends are invited to the memorial service to be held at the Daggett Methodist Church, 44 Church St. Millerton, PA, on June 27th, 2014 at 11:30 AM.
